Happy Holidays!

Whether you celebrate Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, or Christmas, you must admit this time of year is pretty magical. The holidays are VERY special for children. Receiving presents, enjoying time with family, creating traditions, and eating treats, c'mon, what's better than that?
In the Sobel household we celebrated Hanukkah the same every year. We would eat a very filling homemade dinner (which usually included latkes AKA potato pancakes, challah, matzo ball soup, and/or brisket and gelt aka chocolate money for dessert). Followed by the lighting of the menorah and singing of prayers. As kids, we would all take turns each night lighting the menorah -- because we were allowed to "play" with fire, this was very exciting to us! After all of this, we would all gather in the family room and open presents!
Last year, I was away from my family and got to celebrate Hanukkah with my boyfriend and his family. It was pretty much the same thing that I was use to with my family, same food, same prayers...until...they got up to DANCE! Although, I was a bit embarrassed and unprepared at first, I am now very excited for their tradition. My boyfriend and his family look forward to dancing and singing each year, and that is amazing. Have you ever been faced with a new tradition, how did you handle it? Do you have any family traditions? Please share!
Check out some of these great holiday recipes, crafts, and stories to enhance your holiday experience! From school, peers, television, etc. your children probably have questions about the other holidays that are celebrated in December. Embrace diversity, and try some of these great activities that you usually wouldn't do at home.

Happy Thanksgiving!

I tried to find a good Thanksgiving joke to start out this blog. However, they were all too incredibly corny, even for me! So let's start this one off with what we are thankful for this year (from those who responded to my facebook status). Genevieve, age 8, claims she is thankful that her father doesn't like country music. However, I have a feeling someone else said these words (cough, cough Genevieve's father)! I am thankful that Genevieve's father does not like country music, because I was able to use his pre-sale code to purchase my Kenny Chesney/Tim McGraw tickets early! Brady, age 9, told his mother that he is thankful that I (Elyssa) take care of him!! How sweet is that?!

Jake, age 4, told us he is thankful for America! Oh the naive innocence of children, just joking! America IS something to be thankful for, Jake! Ann, age (won't say), responded that she is thankful for her healthy, beautiful, and smart children. She has to say this, that's my mom! Bryce, age 5 told his mother that he is thankful for his Mom-mom and Daddy, but failed to mention her. I think she was a little offended. What are you thankful for? Please share!

As a child, I was a very picky eater (kinda wish I still was) and never looked forward to Thanksgiving the way other people did. So if your child is a mac n' cheese, chicken finger type of kid too, here are some great recipes from www.parenting.com you can try!

Dinner: Turkey Nuggets

Side Dish 1: Kid-Friendly Mashed Potato Scoops (let me know how these are)

Side Dish 2: Apple Stuffing

Dessert: Muffins

Now, on to my favorite portion of the holiday blogs, the arts and crafts! I think we all know how to make a paper chain by now. With rectangular pieces of construction paper, roll them into a circle, and loop them together. Eventually creating a long chain to hang on your walls, banisters, doors, etc. for decoration. BUT, for Thanksgiving, you and the children will write on each loop what you are thankful for, creating a thankful chain!

And of course, there is always the turkey hand. Trace your child's hand, making the thumb the head of the turkey, and the other fingers the feathers. If your feeling a little more creative and artsy check out some of these Thanksgiving Crafts from Kaboose.

Now seriously, what are your plans for Black Friday? Personally, I'm intimidated by this day. However, to get the best out of this once-a-year shopping spree, I suggest that you leave the children at home (especially if you're shopping for them)! Whether you start your shopping at midnight or at noon, let The Babysitting Company know and we will be there!

I hope you all have a very happy, festive, delicious and special Thanksgiving this year!

Love,
Elyssa and The Babysitting Company

How Should The Babysitter Discipline Children?

**TBC never uses physical discipline.

"What are your weaknesses?" The dreaded interview question, that I didn't even prepare myself for when I applied to the daycare six years ago. However, I didn't hesitate to answer, "I have no idea how to discipline children!" I knew, from babysitting since I was 12-years-old, that the time-out method was effective. But what if the children never heard of time-out? Some parents have told me I just need to stand my ground and make sure they don't walk all over me. How do I do that? I can't yell at your child!

Julie Pron from Just Precious told us, "I recommend that they [babysitters]separate the kids when they are misbehaving. Most of the time, they misbehave when they're interacting with each other. They always have a choice, sit on different couches for a bit, away from each other, or go rest in their rooms."

Check out this post from Smartbabysitting.com How Smart Babysitters Discipline ChildrenIt states, "The behavior that receives the most attention, is the behavior that will happen the most." I once had an 11-year-old girl tell me to stop reacting to her 8-year-old brothers acting out, because he liked it. You know what, she was right. Once I stopped giving him the attention he stopped misbehaving.

Geri Fisher told us, "I want the babysitters to be firm and not be a "pushover" and not to get taken advantage of. They should be positive toward the kids and consistent." Nobody wants to be the mean babysitter.  Meanwhile, parents want their children to like their babysitter, so they can enjoy their time out.  I think Geri is right, staying positive is very important.

So whether you use a time out, reward good behavior, or take the older siblings advice, there IS something you can do as a babysitter to discipline the children.

So now, parents we want to know what you suggest your babysitters doing when the children misbehave? And babysitters, do you have any techniques that work well for you?

Stop, Drop, and Roll!

When we were young, we were told to "stop, drop, and roll" if there was a fire. In 2011, there is much more we can do to prepare ourselves, our homes, and families if there is a fire (and I don't mean shorty's burning on the dance floor kind of fire). Since October is Fire Prevention Month, please take a few minutes to read over this blog, and teach your child(ren) about fire safety.

The National Fire Protection Association stated, "It is truly ironic that where people feel safest, in their homes, is where the majority of fire deaths occur. Consider this; US fire departments responded to an estimated 362,500 home structure fires in 2009. These fires caused:

-2,565 civilian fire deaths
-12,600 civilian fire injuries
-$7.6 billion in direct damage

Roughly 85% of all civilian fire deaths in 2009 resulted from home structure fires. Nationwide, once every three hours someone is fatally injured in a home fire."

There are several activities you can do with your family to make sure your home and all of your family members are prepared in case a fire does occur.

1) With your child(ren) go through this checklist and make sure your house is safe! This is a great activity for children, it's educational, and you are protecting everyone from a potential fire.

2) Read to your children and let them ask you questions about fire safety. Check out this list of recommended books from apples4theteacher. This will comfort your child to know their favorite story-book characters have survived a fire.

3) Have a fire escape plan and practice it!
-Try to have 2 escape plans for each room

4)Teach children about smoke detectors. Why we use them and the sound they will make if there is a fire. Adults should change batteries regularly!

5)Take this survey with your kids, to teach them all about fire safety.

6)Instruct your kids not to panic if their clothes catch on fire and to stop, drop and roll.

7)Does all this work make you hungry? Stay in theme and make this yummy fire truck treat with your child(ren).

8)Own and practice using escape ladders. Store them near second floor windows.

9) Have a fire drill. Blind fold your child(ren) to ensure they can escape in the dark (obviously this is practice so be careful). Practice leaving from different rooms in the house. Have a designated meeting place for everyone to go once they are outside the home.

10) It is important that no one touches a door if there is a fire. If you need to touch the door or anything else, grab a towel to avoid burns. Also use the towels for covering your mouth when exiting the home.

11) Make sure your child(ren) know that once they are out of the house, they must go to the designated place and never go back inside the home. Kids might realize that a family member, pet, or a personal belonging is still inside. Let them know, the fire fighter will take care of everything and that it is very dangerous to go back in.

12) In case your child is separated from you, or is ever lost have them keep one of these information cards on them at all times.
There is so much more that we can do than stop, drop, and roll to protect oursevles from fire.  What else do you do with your family to observe Fire Prevention Month? We would love to hear!

Trick or Treat!

Halloween may not be the most important holiday, but it sure is a great one! This is a chance for children to express themselves, be creative, and bond with their family!

There's only one time of year when adults and kids alike, can dress as anyone or anything they want (well...almost anything). Let your child(ren) come up with their own costume and HOW to put it together. It is SO easy to save money and not spend ridiculous amounts on a Halloween costume. Costumes for children and adults can be $100 per costume! If you have 3 kids that's $300! It is so easy to create your own costume with clothes you already have, props, etc. Seriously, if you need any help with a costume let me know. If your child has an idea, I can almost guarantee you there is a way to put the costume together for under $15! Some children costume ideas are: ladybug, princess, fairy, fireman, cat, dog, cheerleader, bride, bumblebee, super hero, hula dancer, cowboy/girl, hippy, flapper, and so much more! You can always make any of these costumes spooky with some face paint and fake blood.

There are so many activities you can do with the children this time of year. You can be artistic, creative, playful, and decorate the house together as a family. Decorate your house with: lollipop ghosts, cotton ball spider webs, and PUMPKINS!, I made my first jack-o'-lantern last year, I think I was deprived as a kid, this is a definite must. There is no need to waste any part of the pumpkin,  you can season and bake the pumpkin seeds, for a yummy fall snack. Make bats out of styrofoam and pipe cleaners. Use poster board, paint, and glitter, to make a spooky Halloween sign or a grave yard in your front lawn. Other fun Halloween activities to look forward to this month include: hayride, haunted hayride, pumpkin picking,  haunted houses. You can even make your own spooky house and invite friends over for a scare. If the kids are old enough let them be the actors, you can use strobe lights, and all of your great decorations.
What is your favorite Halloween tradition, costume, snack, and activity? We can't wait to hear from you! HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!

"Ahhh what did you do to me??" - My first Jack-O'-Lantern!

Fall is Here!

It's officially Autumn (and here on out we will call this season Fall)! Whether you're in a city where the leaves change colors or not, it's still fun to celebrate the Fall, teach the children about seasons, and get ready for the holidays that come with it.

Fall, doesn't exactly have the healthiest holidays (Halloween and Thanksgiving) so it's important to keep those kiddies active this time of year. Therefore, the first activity I'm going to introduce to you is football. Oh, you've heard of it? Okay, well grab a football, go outside, and have a catch with the children and RUN!! Many U.S. citizens devote plenty of their time to football this time of year. So teach your kids how to play and maybe when you're watching it on TV, they will enjoy it too. You never know, this could be the beginning of a new tradition in your household.

Get into spirit, and work as a team to make a scarecrow! All you need are some old over-alls, but jeans work too. An old plaid shirt, a hat, rope, and either straw, hay, or newspaper. Unfortunately, I am not an expert scarecrow maker, so Check out Kids' Turn Central and find out how they suggest making scarecrows.

If you live in a location where the leaves do fall. Grab an adult sized rake for yourself, and a children's sized rake for the child and start raking! Party stores and convenient stores sell orange trash bags, so when they are stuffed they look like pumpkins.  If you are only stuffing the bag with leaves, you can then get a permanent marker and turn the trash bag into a jack o'lantern! Make this a fun and festive way to clean your front yard then decorate it too!

Have a day full of Fall meals with these healthy recipes from Fit Sugar:

Breakfast: warm apple whole wheat toast

Lunch: apple, peanut butter and pumpkin seed stacks

         Snack: banana, apple, cranberry muffins

Dinner: apple squash casserole with a light waldorf salad

         Dessert: baked apple cider doughnuts
YUM! All of this excitement, will certainly get you and the kids ready for Halloween! Make sure you keep an eye out for the Halloween post!

Healthy Lunchbox Tips

Are you worried that your kids aren't getting the nutrition that they need when they are at school? Well stop worrying, and do something about it!

If you feel like you're running around with your head chopped off every morning, you aren't alone.  However, this frantic rushing around may leave you little to no time to pack your child's lunchbox. Therefore, you are just giving him or her money to buy an unknown lunch, or throwing whatever you can find into a brown paper bag. To ensure that your child is getting the lunch they need and deserve pack your kids lunchbox the night before so you can ensure a healthy meal.

Don't forget the protein! I know this can be difficult but it is very important for your child's health and their energy levels while they are at school. This is also a great way to use dinner leftovers. Cut up chicken and add it to your kids favorite meal. Try adding it to soup, pizza, pasta, etc. Check out this

I LOVE this healthy hotdog recipe I found on www.healthline.com.  Take a mozzarella string-cheese stick and wrap 1 or 2 slices of lean turkey around it.  Place the wrap in a hotdog bun.  Include a couple of ketchup and mustard packets for your child to add to the "hotdog."

Do you have a picky eater? Give your child two or three options for lunch. This way they can feel like they decided on their own what they wanted for lunch. If you have the time, let your child help prepare their lunch. Your child will look forward to eating their lunch at school when they know they made it!

Make sure to include fruits and vegetables. These fun activities will remind your child its important to eat fruit and vegetables to grow big and strong:
-Let your child help peel the orange (or prep whatever fruit/vegetable they want). insulated food jar you can use to keep lunch hot for hours.
-On the napkin you put in the lunchbox, draw a picture of a stick figure with big muscles eating carrots.  But don't forget to add carrots to the meal.
-Pack organic peanut butter to let your kids dip apple or banana slices in it.
-Before pouring the grapes (or any other fruit/vegetable) into a plastic bag make a smiley face out of them and show your child. They will be thinking of that face YOU made when they go to eat it.

Then, when your child isn't looking, sneak a little dessert into the lunchbox. When you're doing this, think of that cute little smile on his or her face when they see it!

What is your favorite lunchbox meal or tip? We love to hear your suggestions!

Love,
Elyssa and TBC

Back To School!

Back to school, back to school, back to school, how excited are you?! It's that time of year again and TBC is here to help you!

I did a little research and I found some of the best back-to-school deals at Old Navy, Apple, Staples, Target, and Walmart.  Also you really must check out this article about Thrifty Parents in the Miami Herald by Lidia Dinkova.

Are you a working parent? Do you have more than one child, with multiple schedules? TBC can help you find the perfect babysitter for your family.  We can provide you with someone for before and after school care.

Could you imagine coming home from a long day of work, and your child's homework is already finished?  Our educated babysitters can help with homework.

I know it's a big surprise, but sometimes children just don't want to listen to their parents, sorry! Sometimes the children can be more motivated, and listen better when the babysitter is helping them with their homework.

With school starting, you know there will be Parent-Teacher night, and PTO meetings, reserve and book your sitter now!

Good luck with the new school year!

Love,
Elyssa and TBC

Interview FAQ's

Q: What is the interview?
A: The interview is a chance for me to get to meet you and put a face to the name. I want to know you the best I can so I can set you up with the right families to babysit for. It's also a chance for you to get to know me and The Babysitting Company (TBC) and decide if this is something you want to do. The interview is actually more like an information session. I will go over what TBC does, who we are, and what you need to do to complete your file with TBC. This is also a great opportunity for you to ask as many questions as you want, even though we are always available to help you.

Q: What should I bring to the interview?
A: At this time all you really need to bring is yourself, a pen and paper if you want to take notes, and a positive attitude.

Q:How do I know where to find you when I show up?
A: I usually wear my black, short sleeved, TBC t-shirt.  And of course you can call if the session has not started yet. Make sure you know who you are meeting for your interview.

Tara: (954)734-5221

If it is at a hotel please ask the front desk where the meeting will be held. Please do not call us when the interview has already started.

Q:Where are the interviews held?
A: We meet in public places because we meet with clients all day and it is nice to have a change of scenery. We meet in hotels because we need a larger place where everyone can feel comfortable.

Q: Why are TBC interviews in Miami only held in Fort Lauderdale?
All interviews are held in Fort Lauderdale, Florida because it can be accessed easily by I-95. Group interviews have worked out really well and they maximize the information that you will receive during the information session. Someone may ask a question that is relevant to you! It is also great to meet sitters that currently work with TBC. Although interviews are held in Fort Lauderdale, you choose the area where you take jobs. So, you only need to come to Fort Lauderdale once and then you can stay in whichever area you want to work.

Q: Can I bring a friend to the interview?
A: Absolutely, the more the merrier. If possible, please make sure they reserve a spot ahead of time.

Q: Who else comes to the interview?
A: There can be up to 25 potential new sitters at an interview and up to 10 current sitters. Current TBC sitters come to the interviews to freshen up on new policies and give their input on their jobs!

Q: What do I wear?
A: We are a casual company, but please dress respectful. Wear what you would wear when babysitting. Use your best judgment.

Q: How long are the interviews?
A: In Miami, the interview sessions are 1.5 hours long, but leave 2 hours just in case. In other locations, the small group interviews, last about 30 minutes.

Q: Do I have to take the CPR class at the interview?
A: No, you do not have to take the CPR class at the interview but you will be required to show a valid CPR certification to complete your file and begin working. The CPR certification has to be from an "in person" class, not online. The CPR class that we offer is at a discounted rate and everyone says it is a lot of fun.

Q: What happens after the interview?
A:I will send you an e-mail with the application, guidelines, and a checklist of things you need to do in order to complete your file. After you complete your file, you are ready to go on assignments. First you will have a trial assignment, and work with an experienced sitter.

*FYI: If you RSVP and you cannot attend the interview, let us know as soon as possible. If you do not show up at your scheduled session, you will not be permitted to attend another TBC interview. Do not show up late. Plan your route and parking ahead of time. If you are late we will ask you to leave.

Rolanda's TBC Experience

I have had great assignments so far, however, the best job I ever had with The Babysitting Company was on a Saturday night with a 5-year-old girl.  We played together and we both were enjoying the moment. We played imaginary games, she made me her "client" and we did manicures, facials, etc. It was so funny and interesting. I will never forget this special little girl.  Before I left she hugged me, kissed me, and told me she loved me. It was the best experience ever!

Sitter of the Month- August

This Month I would like to feature a really special sitter, Annie. Annie not only is an awesome sitter but she has a great energy around her that always brings you in. You always want to be around her! She is sweet, kind and has a wonderful soul. Annie has been with the company for just about one year and she is our connection to Palm Beach County! We are slowly but surely expanding in that area and Annie always makes herself available when needed. Since August is Annie's big birthday month and since we love her so much, Annie is August's sitter of the Month!

Be Prepared This Hurricane Season

With Emily, Eugene, and who knows who else is on their way, it's time to prepare for ...dun dun dun...hurricane season! When working with kids, this time of year can be a bit scary. Don't worry though, here are some tips to help you get through a power outage.

1)Stay Calm- If you're anxious, the kids will know it and react. Stay calm, and even make it fun for the kids. Get excited, and say things to the kids like, "yay, fun, no power, lets play!" Make the best out of a bad situation.

2)Be Prepared- Knowing it's hurricane season, talk to the parents before they leave. Ask them where the flash lights are and spare batteries. Candles are also okay to use, but not necessarily recommended. Make sure the children do not go near the lit candle.  Never leave the kids alone in a room, keep your eyes on them at all times.

Also, make sure you arrive with a fully charged cell phone. You always want to make sure the parents can get a hold of you and vice versa. Occasionally text the parents to let them know everything is okay.

3)Prepare food- Have meals, and non-perishable foods ready. If you are taking care of a baby, prepare bottles and keep them in the refrigerator. The fridge should stay cold for a while, just make sure you only open it when absolutely necessary.

4)Have fun- If the power goes out during the day, it's easier to find activities to do. You can play board games, card games, arts and crafts, etc. However, if the power goes out at night, the task is more difficult (unless the kids are sleeping). You can still make it fun though.
-Build tents and forts
-Grab a flash light and put a shadow show on the wall. Little Bunny Foo Foo, is a personal favorite of mine.
-Ask the parents if the siblings can have a sleepover in the same room. This is a fun treat for the children, and they will feel safe.
-If the kids are old enough, playing hide and go seek in the dark is also fun.
-Grab a wireless radio, play some music, sing and dance in the dark.

I hope everyone finds these tips useful. Please feel free to share some of your favorite power outage activities, and please stay safe this hurricane season!

Monika's TBC Experience

The family that I babysit for visits South Florida every other month to enjoy beautiful weather and beaches.  One night that they came in, they took me out to dinner with the children.  After dinner, the family dropped us off at Dave & Busters to play video games and pool.  The night finished off with delicious desserts.  I enjoyed every minute of my time with the children.  I feel very blessed to have a wonderful family in my life.

The Babysitting Company: Entertainment Edition

This blog is a bit different than our typical blogs. I just felt the need to vent about something I saw on TV the other day.

I do not watch TV often, but when I do the Real Housewives on Bravo are my guilty pleasure! Anyone else?

I decided to watch Real Housewives of New York (on demand) the other day, and oh boy did it tick me off. Now it is time for me to vent.

Warning! If you are not familiar with the characters of the show, you might be a bit confused.

LuAnn, was creating a music video for her latest song, and wanted the rest of the ladies to co-star in it, with her. Ramona told her that she couldn't because it was inappropriate and she didn't want to set a bad example for her 16-year-old daughter. Understandable.

But wait, in every single episode Ramona is drinking bottles and bottles of Pinot Grigio. Not to mention, it appears she is quite the drama queen. Who wants to see their mom picking fights on TV?!

So here I am venting. Ramona (I'm sure you're reading) please decide if you want to be a good role model for your daughter or not. If you just don't like LuAnn and once again just trying to cause a scene, then own it!

Whooo, feels good to get that off my chest!

Thank you!!
Elyssa

Two babysitters for the price of one!!

The Babysitting Company's goal is to always ensure families that their babysitter is not only fully qualified with the best babysitting credentials but also have gone through a rigorous training program. Part of the training program consists of new sitters (who have a clear drug test, background check, have been personally interviewed and have a complete file), shadowing a sitter that has been with the company for at least one year on a reservation.

This benefits families in so many ways! First, you always know that your sitter has met the high standards that TBC has set. Second, you can take advantage of having 2 great sitters! Are you having a sleepover, pool party, birthday party or just a big play date? Call The Babysitting Company for a fun evening with not just 1 but 2 great sitters!!!

*Restrictions apply
*24 hours notice required
*Excludes holidays

Let's Play A Game!

Since we work with kids we all know how to have fun and be silly, but now it's our turn to play a game!

Babysitters: If you are spotted wearing a TBC t-shirt you are instantly in the running to win a prize! You can also take a picture of yourself in a qualifying location (pretty much any appropriate,  public place).

Non-babysitters: If you report to either myself or Rachel that you saw someone wearing a TBC t-shirt, and got their name, you are instantly in the drawing also.

Please realize that me and Rachel have eyes everywhere and we are smart (ridiculously smart), so please no teaming up, or cheating, or you will be disqualified.

Have fun!!! Let us know if you have any questions!

Sitter of the Month - June

Debi Andrews
The sitter of the Month for June is Debi Andrews. Debi has been working with the company for almost 3 years and is now truly a part of The Babysitting Company family. Debi has a magical connection with our clients, especially infants and toddlers. She has a great and calming energy that soothes and comforts both babies and new moms! Our clients often schedule their evenings out and trips around Debi's availability and she always accommodates even when it means losing sleep or taking 3 jobs in a day! We are lucky to have Debi as a part of our team!

Sandra Lopez
Sandra has been working with the company for just about a year and we had an instant connection. Sandra is helpful, kind and very patient. She also takes charge and is a great leader. I appreciate everything that Sandra does for me and for the company.

Nancy Vazquez
Nancy is a natural born leader and a go getter. She takes every responsibility very seriously and always goes above and beyond what she is asked to do. She gets along with everyone and I thank her for all of the extra effort she puts in to making clients feel comfortable.

Sincerely,
Rachel
